FRESH CATCH
Hi, Inday

As we continue to tackle the rising trend of overfishing, it's encouraging that over half of Aussie seafood consumers now recognise and trust the MSC blue fish tick label. The scrutiny of greenwashing in Australia and New Zealand underscores the need for accurate and verifiable claims.

The recent Seafood Directions conference in Tasmania was a good reminder of the potency of collective dialogue and action. The team and I continue to look forward to the work we have and need to do with the community.

This issue of our newsletter highlights the importance of dialogue across all sectors and platforms, including public educational events like the recent National Science Week on ocean literacy.

The Ocean Stewardship Fund provides grants to MSC-certified fisheries or those in improvement projects, aiming to increase sustainable fisheries globally by funding research and supporting fisheries on their sustainability journey. We allocate 5% of annual royalties from MSC product sales to the fund, along with third-party donations.

Seafood Directions, Tasmania

The conference firmly focused on Australia's journey toward sustainable outcomes for the seafood industry. We were reminded of the interconnectedness of our oceans, trade, climate, biodiversity, and the complexities we must navigate to ensure a sustainable future for future generations.

We also supported the Women In Seafood Australasia Power Up Breakfast, creche program and Guppies Kids Club by donating MSC Big Blue Future tote bags with Saltwater School resources. Run by Corporate Kids, progressive opportunities like these enable parents, particularly women, to attend easily, promoting industry equity.

Whitefish powering global MSC certification

Long-standing MSC-certified whitefish fisheries have driven MSC label uptake in Europe, North America, and Asia. In 2022-2023, 74% of the global wild whitefish catch engaged with the MSC program.

Our new publication highlights their sustainability and market impact, offering analysis, data, and case studies on key species like cod, pollock, and hake.

Promoting sustainable seafood to foodservice leaders

In July, the MSC supported Bidfood Australia at the Executive Chefs Club Luncheon in Melbourne, where over 30 top chefs from Melbourne and Sydney sampled Fremantle Octopus and Ocean King Prawns.

In September, the MSC returned to the Talking Trends Stage at Fine Foods Australia's 40th anniversary, discussing sustainable seafood assurance and consumer insights.
