Event description

The Crime & Security Science Research Group (CaSS) in the UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences hosts the Translational Criminology Seminar Series.

Join us for our second seminar of 2024: Australia's First Terrorism 'Cold Case' Investigation

As part of the Translational Criminology Seminar Series, Operation Forbearance is a presentation by two of Australia’s leading counter-terrorism experts on their real-world ‘cold case’ investigation into the 1982 terrorist attacks on the Israeli Consulate and Hakoah Club, Sydney. In the backdrop of the current conflict in Gaza, this presentation aims to examine terrorism, investigation strategies, the evolvement of forensic procedures and criminal legislation, the impact of international relationships on the Australian criminal justice system, the challenges of converting ‘intelligence’ into ‘evidence’; and how proactive strategies can prevent future acts of terrorism.

Guest Speaker Bio: Carolyn O’Hare APM & Dr David Gawel APM

These two speakers are recognised as leading Australian counter-terrorism experts with a combined experience of over 55 years in the field. Both have recently retired as Detective Chief Inspectors from the Counter-Terrorism Command of the NSW Police Force. During their service, Carolyn and David have dedicated the majority of their working life to eradicating the threat of terrorism from our community. They are committed to education and understand its importance in preventing terrorism. Recently, David published a book titled Principles of the Counter-Terrorism Process: A Guide for the New Guard of Counter-Terrorism Professionals, a practical real-world how-to-guide on countering terrorism in the Australian environment.
